Born November 20, 1932 in Allentown, she was the loving daughter of the late Charles W. and Anna D. (Miller) Arndt. Joan was a 1950 graduate of William Allen High School. She continued her education and graduated in 1954 from Allentown Hospital School of Nursing. Her nursing career defined the way she chose to live her life, meeting the needs of others before thinking of herself. With a career spanning 54 years, Joan began nursing at Allentown Hospital in the area of obstetrics. Joan was blessed to find her true calling as a visiting nurse and caring for the elderly. She retired from Lehigh Valley Hospital Homecare in 1997. Her vocation incomplete, she continued to care for others in facilities throughout the Lehigh Valley until February of 2008 when she became ill. She established a heart felt connection with all her patients, the true mark of a nursing professional. Most recently, Joan worshiped as a member of Salem Bible Church, Joans deep faith in Christ was exemplified in many other deeds beyond her nursing career. She served many years as a Sunday and Bible school teacher, consistory member, deaconess and volunteer at several local food banks on a monthly basis. Although blessed with five children, Joan possessed an abundance of love and became a foster mother to many beginning in 1973 through Lehigh County Children and Youth. Joan had a deep conviction for advocating and defending those who were unable to speak for themselves. Joan had a profound love for gardening. Gods promise of the springtime blooms, dealing with summer drought, enjoying falls last gasp of color were all joys of equal measure. Animals had a very special place in Joans heart. Her dog, Sophie, and cat, Smokey, were constant companions. Strays and pedigrees alike enjoyed equal measures of her love. Survivors: Sons, Robert and his wife, Cindy, of Macungie, David and his wife, Lynn, of Alburtis, Steven and his wife, Anne, of Breinigsville, Andrew and his life partner, James Fontaine, of Sharon Hill, Derek Sperlbaum of North Whitehall, Karl Bell of Allentown; daughters, Amy and her husband, Gregory Kuebler, of Kutztown, Lydia and her husband, Mark Erkert, of Boyertown.
