3 Year Old Dies In Tragic Accident
Larry Dale Campbell, not quite three years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Campbell, Jr., was killed instantly Thursday morning around 9 o'clock. The tragic accident occurred as the child was racing over to greet his father who was driving his truck into the farmyard. Exactly what happened is not certain but later conjecture indicated that the chubby 3-year-old had stumbled just before he reached the truck and had plunged his head against a wheel or the side of the truck. Mr. Campbell, who never saw his son coming drove on into the farmyard and went into the barn to let out the cattle. He returned and climbed onto his tractor before seeing the boy lying on the ground. Racing over he picked the boy up and drove him to the hospital but Larry Dale was dead when he arrived at the hospital. Mrs. Campbell had been outside hanging up clothes on the south side of the house while her son was playing. His toys were on the north side of the house and although she noticed his disappearance she believed he must be playing with the toys. There is a small mound of ground next to the road and it is believed the young fellow may have tripped on the ground just before reaching the truck. The only mark on the boy's body was on his head, which was crushed. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell live on a farm near Woodlawn, seven miles south and two and a half west of Sabetha. Larry Dale was their only child.

To Call Inquest To Investigate Death of Ed Cribb Prosecutor J. Franklin Huntley, Coroner W. R. Birk, Police Chief Richard Sunior and State Police Detective Conn were to confer at 4 p.m. Wednesday to assemble information for a coroner's inquest into the death of Edward Lee Cribb, 24. Mr. Cribb died from gunshot wounds in the head about 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept 27. Prosecutor Huntley said the report of Pathologist William Walters, M.D., of Battle Creek, who conducted the autopsy performed Sept. 28, was received Tuesday. The pathologist's report and other information concerning the death of the father of three children were to be discussed at yesterday's conference. The inquest was expected to be called by Dr. Birk at the request of Prosecutor Huntley. A jury of six will be empaneled for the examination into the cause of Mr. Cribb's death. Mrs. Cribb, Prosecutor Huntley said, has stated that she had succeeded in talking her husband into giving her the .45 Army pistol he had been holding and threatening to use it to take his own life. After giving her the gun, she said, he tried to pull it back. The pistol fired, hitting him in the head. A second shot apparently fired as Mrs. Cribb crawled over her husband's body while still holding the gun. That shot also hit him in the head.

The truck driver, Gary Daniel Ebert of 509 Kurtz St., died after he lost control of his rig on Route 329 in Allen Township near Northampton in a 5:18 a.m. accident. In the Northampton-area accident, state police at Bethlehem said Ebert's truck was traveling west on Route 329 when it ran off the road, continued 180 feet along the shoulder, hit a utility pole and rolled over. The accident knocked out power for up to six hours for more than 1,600 Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. customers in the Allen Township and Northampton areas. The mishap also closed Route 329 for several hours while workmen cleaned up an estimated 30 tons of "clinker" carried by Ebert's rig. Clinker is a product taken from a cement kiln before it is ground into cement. PP&L spokesman Bert Daday reported 1,639 customers in Allen Township and Northampton were without power for 1 1/2 hours. Fifty- four had no power until 11:27 a.m. According to police, Ebert's rig, a 1983 Mack tractor-trailer, destroyed a slate retaining wall along the rim of a quarry after running off the road. Police said the truck would have plunged into the quarry had it not hit the pole first. Assistant Northampton County Coroner George Bensing listed a crushed chest and fractured skull as the cause of death. Allen Township rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to remove Ebert's body from the truck. Fifteen men responded to the call. The Allen Township Ambulance Squad also responded. Ebert was the husband of Josephine L. (Leibenguth) Ebert. He was a mason for Coplay Cement Co. for 14 years. Born in Allentown, he was a son of Daniel J. and Lucille (Krause) Ebert of Catasauqua. Surviving with his widow and parents are three daughters, Michelle Y., Danielle L. and Janelle M., all at home, and a sister Gale, wife of William Bennett of North Catasauqua. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the John H. Brubaker Funeral Home, 3rd and Walnut streets, Catasauqua. Calling hours will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

She was raised on the family farm southeast of Corbin and attended all eight grades at the Spring Creek School, District #36. In 1929 she graduated from South Haven High School. Her 1933 marriage to Frank Powers ended in divorce. In 1938 she married Beryl J. Evans at the home of her parents. Until Beryl's death in 1976 they lived on the farm north of Corbin that Beryl purchased a year or two before their marriage. In 1955 Beryl and Verna built a new house on the farm. Verna designed the home and together they did most of the building, finishing, and decorating. After Beryl's death, Verna moved the house to 902 N. Poplar in Wellington, KS and added a full basement and two-car garage. She lived there until she moved to Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, KS in 1996. After graduating from high school, Verna taught at King School, west of Caldwell, KS for several years. She did occasional substituting for many years in the Corbin and Perth area after her marriage to Beryl. After completing a 320-hour Nurse Aide Training course in 1969, she worked at St. Luke's Hospital and the Wellington Hospital as a CNA. Verna was always active in church and community affairs. She was a charter member of the Corbin Women's Society of Christian Service, and served in numerous capacities at both the local and district levels of Methodist Women organizations. She was largely responsible for beginning the tradition of the Corbin Turkey Supper. It started as a means of feeding the election board on election day and eventually became a yearly event held at the church. As a young wife she joined the Home Demonstration Unit and maintained her membership as it changed into the Extension Homemaker's Unit. She served as president five different times and other offices as needed. Many 4-H members will remember her as sewing and knitting leader of the Skylark and Perth 4-H Clubs. In 1958 she was elected to serve on the Sumner County Agriculture Extension Council. Verna served on the Sumner County Farm Bureau Board and as Sumner County Farm Bureau Women's chairman for many years. She served as chairman of the 4th District Farm Bureau Women for several years, and in 1968 she was selected as 4th District Farm Bureau Woman of the Year. In 1981 she was named the overall winner in the High Plains Journal Agri-Woman of the Year. In that interview she was quoted as saying, "My family is my most precious accomplishment." When asked about her many community and church activities, she replied with a saying that she learned from her Grandmother Irwin, "Service is the rent we pay for the space we occupy." Political involvement was another area of service in Verna's life. She served as Downs Township committeewoman for many years before moving to Wellington. In 1976 she was thrilled to attend the National Republican Convention as a voting delegate from 5th District. She was a member of the Martha Vail D.A.R. chapter in Anthony, KS. Two other areas benefiting from her involvement were the South Central Kansas Library Board, to which she was appointed by Governor Bennett, and the South Central Mental Health Services Board, where she served as secretary. In 1993 she was presented with an honorary life membership to the Sumner County Historical Society. After her move to Wellington, she was elected to the City Council from 1980 to 1984. In 1996 health concerns necessitated a move from Wellington to Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Verna was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marjorie Sue Powers; her parents, Larnie and Ada Hess; husband Beryl Evans; daughter Dorothy "Dori" (Evans) Cooper; brother Robert Harlan Hess; and two sisters, Pearl (Hess) Lungren and Ferne (Hess) Boyce.
